BodySchool: meeting the world around us
with Malcolm Manning (UK/Finland)
Physical dialogue with ourselves and the environment in which we are situated. Being aware of the way we perceive the world around us
and how the world perceives us.
May 25-27th | at I-DEJAS MĀJA / Jūrmala

Meeting the world around us
in this workshop we’ll spend some time in the studio and some outside in the natural environment.
In the studio, we’ll do some Feldenkrais Method® Awareness Through Movement classes and experiential anatomy exercises that focus on the hands, feet and head-based sensory organs – the parts of ourselves through which we most commonly encounter the world around us.
We’ll then move out of the studio into the surrounding environment to explore tasks, some guided and some undertaken alone, that bring our attention to how we can employ what we learned in the studio to connect with the world around us.

BodySchool is a workshop series that applies somatic and postmodern dance practices to everyday life situations. The workshops move fluidly between lecture and class formats maintaining a sense of lightness, ease and good humour. There is nothing in these workshops to get right. The aim instead is to foster a physical dialogue with ourselves and the environment in which we become empowered to be our own experts.

Malcolm’s work is founded upon his ability to create the conditions to meet ourselves afresh with a childlike sense of wonder. He does this through engaging playfully with our innate curiosity unhinde- red by expectation. This attitude, as much as the material itself, is what he offers through his work

Malcolm Manning, works as a somatic movement researcher, educator, mentor and artist. He teaches Contact Improvisation, Experiential Anatomy, Improvisation/Composition, Authentic Movement and is a certified Feldenkrais Method® practitioner. He is a senior lecturer in dance at the Theatre Academy of Finland (TEAK) and has been involved in developing and teaching the Dance And Somatics one-year course at ISLO in Joensuu, Finland. He also travels to teach internationally
